The Solution to Reading Time Fights, Thankful Thursday

Welcome back to Thankful Thursday! A day when we can gather and share in each others gratitude and lift our burdens with viewing all the blessings we have been given. Even when things are at their darkest; when we focus on our blessings it helps lift our hearts and makes our burdens a little lighter.

Both of our boys are required to read 20 minutes a day for school. When the time comes each day for the reading time, it usually consists of them whinning and complaining, “I don’t want to read!”

Does this sound familiar?

But this week we have found a solution! And really I can’t believe how simple it is! We go about our evening normally, and then at bedtime we have our usual few minutes family reading from the Scriptures, prayers and hugs and we tuck them into bed. But this week, we’ve allowed each boy to “stay up” for 20 minutes to read from their favorite book.

And you know what? It worked!!! Now they beg each night that we allow them time to stay up and read! And they actually will sit and read that entire time. We’ve checked!

This week the 6 year old has been reading a thick book that is full of fun “believe it or not” facts. Normally he won’t read anything longer than a 5 page picture book with very few words. But he has dived into this book, thrilled by the fun facts and the fact that the one book gives him ample to read for his 20 minutes. He then marks his spot and continues the next night.

The 8 year old has really delved into the old “Choose your own adventure” books. I found about 6 of them at the local thrift store for $0.50 each. What a bargain! Not only are they amazing, but they have truly captured the 8 year old’s attention and he can’t wait to see what his choice will bring to the characters! I really need more of them! The 8 year old has since read each one of those books! They were what finally got him interested in chapter books!

So for this week, You can say I’m VERY thankful for finding the cure to our fighting over reading time! I’m thankful that for the time being my boys have found a way to love reading.

What are YOU thankful for this week?
