Get Ready to sell your house, Guest Post

We just put a sign in our front yard – FOR SALE BY OWNER! Pretty intimidating to someone like me. I’m going to have to welcome strangers into my house and act like it’s no big deal when they open my closets, look in my bathrooms and study my décor. Yikes! That’s definitely out of my comfort zone.

3 Things to do to get ready to sell your house:

1. Delete

You can’t sell a house that is full of clutter, junk, piles of stuff and chaos. I have taken so many bags to the trash can, donated to the local resource center, and given to friends…. and there's still piles in my garage!

2. Clean

Once you think you have the clutter gone, you start cleaning. If you're like me, you do cleaning on a regular basis – but it isn't that deep cleaning. I do more spot cleaning as I have the time. But with this new adventure, I am on a cleaning mission!

3. Do it over!

Now that you have so many clean surfaces, you can once again see that there is more stuff that is just taking up space. So you go back to cleaning out stuff again. You fill boxes, bags and the back of your vehicle and delete again. That of course shows up that you have a whole new section of your house that needs a deep cleaning. Once you think you have your house ready, invite a very trusted friend to come look at your house. Have her give you a 2nd opinion. Is there still extra clutter that should be removed or cleaned out? If you don't have a friend who can help out, enlist the help of your camera. Just stand at your front door and take pictures of each angle. Then put the picture on your screen and take a look. Sometimes you will see things that you missed when you just looked with your eyes.

Here's the intersting part… Now that my stuff is starting to be pared down, I am finding that I kind of like the 'less is more' look! I may keep going through these 3 steps on a regular basis. It's kind of freeing to not have stuff cluttering my life!

Ever sold a house?

Got any great tips for me?

I have a feeling this is going to be a huge learning experience!

  1. Great insight. Putting everything into perspective seems to help as well. I’m not going to stress about keeping everything on the up and up all the time. Instead I’m going to keep telling myself that my Mom’s coming over at any time and then it’s just a matter of perspective.

  2. I haven’t put my own place up for sale, because I live in an apartment, but my mom’s house needed to be de-cluttered for sure!

  3. Amanda @ The Frugal Greenish Mama

These are truly great ideas! You want people to be able to imagine their things in your house and not be overwhelmed by your stuff.

  4. Have Sippy Will Travel Mommy Blogger

i wish i could sell my house….stupid down market

  5. I sold my first house in one week, the second house in 2 months and the third house took 15 months – shows what an impact the economy has!

  6. removing the clutter always makes me happy. good luck on your house sale!

  7. Ahhh, we are putting up our house for sale soon! As in… as soon as we find time to do it! I’m soooo not looking forward to your 3 steps LOL. We have so much crap (toys – 2 kids!) it’s ridiculous. I think we’ll rent a storage unit… my worry is the timing–finding a new house to buy at the same time as our house sells… it’s just all overwhelming! Good luck to you and thanks for the tips!

  8. We just put our house up for sale 2 weeks ago! These are great tips! Another suggestion is to get a storage unit. Things that you don’t want to get rid of, but can live without for a bit, store! It helps take the clutter down even further. Also remove any personal items (family photos, etc). You want the buyers to envision their own decor. Good luck on the sale!

  9. Great tips… now if I could ever BUY a house I will know what to do when the time comes to sell one. :)
